Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the combination of non-toxic dyes known as photosensitizers (PS) and visible light of the correct wavelength to be absorbed by the PS which in the presence of oxygen leads to the generation of reactive oxygen species that can damage cellular constituents leading to cell death.
